1. Isaiah 14:21 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Who was the last king of Babylon after whom the line was discontinued entirely?

Isaiah 14:21 (ESV)

21 Prepare slaughter for his sons because of the guilt of their fathers, lest they rise and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.”

In the Bible, Belshazzar is named as the last king of the Babylonians (Daniel 5:30). However, there are inscriptions which name Nabonidus, with Belshazzar as his successor. It is probable that Nabonidus appointed Belshazzar as co-regent. Nabonidus surrendered and died in peace, but what is said about Belshazzar in Daniel 5:1–31 is in accordance with the prophecy. Throughout, the prophecy describes the future in general terms. The description of the greatness of the Babylonian king was fulfilled in Nabonidus, and that of the downfall of the Babylonian king was fulfilled in Belshazzar.
