The commands of 1 Peter 4:7–11 are all connected, with each command flowing logically from the previous. The paragraph had begun with a reference to Christ having removed all hurdles to his return. With that return possible at any moment, Christians need to retain a mental state that allows for persistent prayer. A prayer focused on God and the fulfilling of his agenda results in expressing (God’s kind of) love to the brotherhood. Such love includes hospitality to marginalized fellow believers, complete with words of encouragement and deeds of support. All of that is possible because God himself is the endless source of whatever his people need (Romans 8:32).
7 The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.
