The Philippians must do everything—all their deeds—without grumbling or disputing. The question is whether this refers to their dealings with each other, or their attitude toward God. The word usage here is possibly a reference to the grumbling of the people of Israel in the wilderness against God and his servant Moses (see Exodus 16:7–12 and Numbers 14:26–38). In those texts the word grumbling
or dispute
occurs repeatedly. In the Greek translation of the Old Testament the same word is used as this verse. The without grumbling or disputing
fits the people’s obedience to God (Philippians 2:12).
