Adam’s response shows that he thought he could hide from God. The fact that this is impossible can be seen in this chapter and also in many other places in the Bible. Two other examples:
Psalm 139:1–12. It does not matter where David goes, the Lord is there to guide him.
Jonah 1:1 – 2:10. Jonah does not want to carry out God’s command to go to Nineveh. So he sails off in the opposite direction. He thinks he can get away from God and that the Lord will then no longer see him. The Lord shows that such a notion is a complete misrepresentation. It is impossible to get away from the Lord.
10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
