After the fall, the Lord shows that he will continue to care for his children in love as a Father. He ensures that the fig leaves are replaced by clothing made of animal skins. Man permanently needs clothes after the fall. The Lord shows that he cares for his children in tender love by putting on their new clothes himself. The Lord remains personally involved with man as his child!
It is also good to note that these clothes are made of animal skins, which is so much more durable than those aprons made of fig leaves. Something else comes to mind. The Lord killed animals to supply clothes for man. Animals needed to die to provide for man. For thousands of years, animal sacrifices will be offered to point to the Saviour of sins who was to come. This pointed to the great Lamb of God who would need to make the great and decisive sacrifice on the cross. Through his sacrifice he will ensure that people who are guilty will wear the clothes that cover their sins. These will show that they have been washed in the blood of Christ.
The Lord clothed Adam and Eve with garments for which blood had been shed. Those who seek the Christ, who is promised in this chapter, will be given new clothes that testify of God’s salvation; as we can also read in Isaiah 61:10: I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and a as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
21 And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
