The strange fire of the priests is now met by the fire of God. Previously, the exact same phrase was used in Leviticus 9:24. There divine fire came only after all the sacrifices had been offered. This time the fire from God is the means of judgment on these brothers. The fire of the Lord is found twelve times in the Old Testament. Six of these references refer to blessing, while another six refer to judgment. On this occasion, the fire of the Lord comes in judgment to kill Nadab and Abihu.
2 And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.
