The providence of the LORD

1 Samuel 9:1–10:16 (ESV)

1 There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a man of wealth.

We have seen how the Lord guided the events to bring Saul to Samuel. He is in complete control of history, working all things to accomplish his purposes. And for the most part as the Lord does that, his people are left in the dark. We are not given the privilege of detailed predictions about the next chapters in our life. Like Saul’s servant or his uncle, we are not given the finer details of God’s plan. The result is that we will not always be able to see how the Lord is mercifully working all things for our good. In the ordinary day to day events of our lives we face boredom and frustration. We work hard to put bread on the table and a roof over our heads—nothing special, nothing remarkable. It can sometimes be hard to see signs of mercy. But if we lift our eyes from the detail, we must remember that God remains in control.

The Lord has not promised us heaven on earth, and he has not promised to reveal the detail ahead of time. We face lots of uncertainty and we cannot know the future, but we can rest assured that our merciful God is in complete control. He has demonstrated his love for us in sending his Son, and so, even if the day to day details of life do not make sense, even if I do not understand why coming hardships and suffering will be for my benefit, I can be confident that God knows what he is doing and he is working things for my good. The Lord gives good gifts to his people. You can trust him with your future.
