What is a man of God?

1 Samuel 9:6 (ESV)

6 But he said to him, “Behold, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor; all that he says comes true. So now let us go there. Perhaps he can tell us the way we should go.”

A man of God is a man who serves God, in this case a reference to the prophet Samuel.1 He would have been well known in Israel (see 1 Samuel 3:20; 1 Samuel 4:1; 1 Samuel 7:2–3, 1 Samuel 7:15–17; 1 Samuel 8:4–5), specifically because of the fact that his words came true (1 Samuel 3:19b). He is not mentioned by name most likely to heighten suspense in the narrative.2
