The instruction from Samuel stipulates that Saul must take a seven-day retreat before he becomes engaged in any kingly activity.1 Probably this is to give him some time to reflect on the words he has heard and the signs that he has seen. Remember, Saul left his home to look for donkeys and he goes back as Israel’s anointed king. A big change has taken place in his life. The instruction also serves to emphasize that Saul must submit to God’s Word as it comes through Samuel.2
8 Then go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.”
