Why was Saul working in the fields if he was king?

1 Samuel 11:5 (ESV)

5 Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh.

There was no kingly palace at this time. Even though Saul had been anointed and revealed to the people, he continued with ordinary work at his house, likely ploughing in his father’s field with their oxen.1 At this time in his life, he lived in the manner of the judges.2
