22So on the day of the battle there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan, but Saul and Jonathan his son had them.
Possibly, they were the only people permitted by the Philistines to have proper weapons, assuming that the Philistine control of Israel was so emphatic. Otherwise, because weapons were expensive, they alone had the money to buy equipment for war.
