Psalm 44:5 (ESV)

5 Through you we push down our foes; through your name we tread down those who rise up against us.

The one who prays knows himself to be a child of God. All power comes from the Lord. Through him we conquer our opponents. His name is the same as all proven powers from the past, told to us by our parents. But that name and those great deeds can also become the cause that people will want to fight us. The enemy becomes fiercer all the time.

To push down makes us think of an attack by a bull or a ram. God’s hand, God’s name stands over against the sword, the arm, the power of the people. We see how the Lord fights for his people in 2 Samuel 5:24: “And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”
