Here is a sketch of total powerlessness. Delivered as sheep to be slaughtered, scattered among the heathen nations, the enemies of God’s people. In Psalm 44:22 the same complaint is heard. The author is trying to rouse pity.
Strong language is used: You have…
Behind the enemies’ deeds one must think of the mighty Lord God (Psalm 44:4). Does the Lord think of his own name and honour?!
In Isaiah 52:1–15 it seems that the Lord indicates that slavery in Egypt and the exodus in Assyria has not helped at all. In all of this the Lord does think about his Name. Isaiah 52:5 reads, Now therefore what have I here, declares the Lord, seeing that my people are taken away for nothing? Their rulers wail, declares the Lord, and continually all the day my name is despised.
See also Ezekiel 36:20, which says, But when they came to the nations, wherever they came, they profaned my holy name, in that people said of them, These are the people of the Lord, and yet they had to go out of his land.
11 You have made us like sheep for slaughter and have scattered us among the nations.
