This psalm starts with an assignment: Sing to the Lord a new song.
We have plenty of reasons for that, according to the anonymous author. Yahweh, the name of our God
(Psalm 98:3), which indicates how seriously he takes his covenant with his people, has done marvellous things!
Which ones? That is not mentioned here. The first listeners have obviously thought of the liberation action out of Egypt (see Deuteronomy 5:15).
Also in later times, the Lord showed his power, as shown in Isaiah 52:10: “The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God” (compare with Revelation 15:3).
For Christians, it is impossible not to think here of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18!), and to look forward already with eager anticipation to Jesus’ return in glory.
1 Oh sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
