Joshua kept his arm outstretched with a sword or javelin sword in his hand until the victory was complete. This shows that the outstretched sword/javelin was more than a signal to start the battle; it was also a symbol of God’s presence and help.1 This presents a clear parallel between Joshua and Moses (see Exodus 17:8–16).
18 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.
