What does it mean that the man’s tongue was released?

Mark 7:35 (ESV)

35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.

A literal translation of the phrase would be, the chain of his tongue was broken. The Greek word refers to the chain that binds a prisoner. Jesus freed the man from the difficulties and impediments of his physical handicap.1
