Our words are important to God

1 Samuel 14:24–46 (ESV)

24 And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food.

When it comes to our words, we must be careful about what we say. Saul made many rash oaths to protect his pride and his image. He blasphemed the name of God and did not act with honour. Our words are important to God. He is concerned for truth, and he wants us to follow in his ways. Therefore, be careful to consider what you say—to keep your oath even when it hurts (Psalm 15:4), to let your yes be yes and your no, no (Matthew 5:37), and to stand up for what is right even if you must stand alone.
