Sermon outline for Matthew 5:33-37

Matthew 5:33–37 (ESV)

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’

I  Introduction

Explain how truth is something we all cherish and want from others, why it is so important for society and relationships. Lament the fact that we are tempted to lie and slow to speak what is true, especially when it reflects badly on us. Comment on the fact that this is a reality for everyone in this world, one that was seen also in the past, and one that gave rise to the need for oaths.

II The need for oaths

  • Explain: How did oaths function in the ancient world? Where were they introduced/especially needed?

  • Explain: What does the Old Testament say about oaths?

  • Explain: How did the Israelites reduce the Bible’s teaching on oaths so that they could excuse lies? What was the system that they developed?

  • Explain/Apply: When Jesus forbids oaths, what is the context of his words? What does he mean? What does he not mean?

  • Explain/Apply: Are oaths permitted for the Christian? What is their purpose?

  • Apply: Jesus wants his people to speak the truth. Kingdom citizens must be known as those who say what they mean and mean what they say.

III On the side of truth

  • Explain: With whom are we aligning when we lie instead of speaking what is true?

  • Explain: What were the lies that Satan told Adam? What was the result of Adam believing the lie?

  • Explain/Apply: How do we also follow the example of Adam by lying to cover up our shame? What is the judgment that liars deserve?

  • Explain: How was Jesus different from Adam? What did Jesus do so that we can be forgiven for our lies?

  • Apply: What can we do practically to be better at keeping our promises? What are the vows that people have made that they need to be reminded of? How should we treat each other’s words in church?

IV Concluding prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for sending your Son our Lord Jesus Christ to make us part of your kingdom. Thank you that you stand for truth and that we can trust every word that we read in your Word. Thank you that you forgive us our sins on account of Jesus Christ, that he perfectly obeyed your law and never blasphemed your name or bore false witness. We know that our place with you in glory is secure because of Christ and we praise you for him and your mercy.

Thank you also that are teaching us how to live. Please change us by your Spirit so that we will more and more delight in what is true and stay away from lies. In our daily living, may we make a concerted effort to keep the commitments that we make and to do what we say we will do. May we also be willing to let go of our pride and stop blaming other people for our failures.

We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
