1. Malachi 3:5 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the sin of oppressing the hired worker, widow, fatherless, and sojourner?

Malachi 3:5 (ESV)

5 “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the LORD of hosts.

Cheating hired workers (Leviticus 19:13; Deuteronomy 24:14–15), oppressing widows and orphans (Deuteronomy 10:18; Deuteronomy 27:19), and thrusting aside the sojourner (Exodus 22:21) are all sins committed against those who are weak and vulnerable in society, and often poor. These are people who depend on others for their sustenance, and often lived day-to-day at the subsistence level. To sin against these little ones was to pit oneself against God, who was a father to the fatherless, the protector of widows (Psalm 68:5), and the defender of sojourners (Deuteronomy 10:18–19).
