A question that arises with this verse is: are the verbs here to be translated as an encouragement (a task) or as an expectation (something for the future), as in: let the offspring pass on the stories
or the offspring will pass on the stories.
In contrast to some English Bible translations, we choose for the encouragement (a task). Because, looking at David’s attention for praise and worship, it clear that he yearns to see that this enthusiasm, sung about in the psalm, spills over to the younger generation. Add to this that the task of telling the next generation the great things God has done, appears more often in the Bible.
4 One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.
