Excuses for intermarriage

Judges 14:1–4 (ESV)

1 Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines.

Samson is a perfect example of looking for gratification through something that looks sweet, rather than being faithful to God’s Word. That Word clearly says that God’s children are only to marry in the Lord. How hard it is on believing parents to see their son or daughter choose a spouse who is not of the Lord. What happens here in the discussion between Samson and his parents still happens today. The discussion may be more polite than Samson’s, I found someone. Get her for me as my wife. The son or daughter might instead say things like, She is a much better girl than many in our church. Or, He or she promises to come to church with me. Or, What if the Lord wants to use me to help him or her come to know the Lord? This is putting the cart before the horse. But God’s Word is clear; it certainly was clear to Mr. & Mrs. Manoah. Samson rebelled, against the Lord and his parents. And there were many sad consequences.
