What is significant about Saul trying to seize the skirt of Samuel’s robe?

1 Samuel 15:27 (ESV)

27 As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and it tore.

The fact that Saul grabbed the hem of Samuel’s robe suggests that he was on his knees in an act of supplication, a final plea for mercy.1 Samuel’s robe was most likely an outer garment with loose, wide sleeves and elaborate fringes on the edge of the cloth. Such a garment was worn only by royalty or priests.2
