Most translations say that Samson caught three hundred foxes. It is possible, however, that these were jackals, for they were more common in this area, and jackals hunt in packs while foxes tend to hunt alone. The Hebrew word was used for both animals. Jackals are certainly in view in Ezekiel 13:4, Lamentations 5:18, and Psalm 63:11.1
