This description of the lion’s behaviour speaks of the total disregard the Assyrians had for their victims. They feasted on conquered nations with no regard for their humanity. All the people of Nineveh thrived on the cruel conquest of its enemies; the lions filled the cave with torn flesh.
But where is that place now, asks Nahum? Where are the lions? Where is the sense of being comfortable with cruelty? It is all gone because the Lord is about to disturb them. The Lord will pour out his judgment on their arrogance.
12 The lion tore enough for his cubs and strangled prey for his lionesses; he filled his caves with prey and his dens with torn flesh.
