1. Nahum 3:5–6 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Is the shameful exposure described in Nahum 3:5–6 really necessary?

Nahum 3:5–6 (ESV)

5 Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts, and will lift up your skirts over your face; and I will make nations look at your nakedness and kingdoms at your shame.

The image of the evil woman being exposed and shamed demonstrates that all evil is ultimately exposed by the Lord and before the Lord. Prostitutes offer what they cannot deliver: beauty and love. They sell what should not be sold and cannot be bought: intimacy and a lifetime of love, care, and commitment. The exposure of Assyria and our own exposure demonstrate that what any culture offers, believes, and promises apart from Christ is a lie.1 Jesus himself claimed to be the light that would expose all deeds (John 3:19–20).

We should also remember that the Lord does not simply expose people to simply shame them, but to lead them to repentance and forgiveness. Paul writes in Romans 13:14, But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. The word clothe or cover (put on) also means to atone or deliver. To be clothed in Christ means that the nakedness of each person’s unrighteousness was covered by Christ.
