What kind of covenant did Jonathan make with David?

1 Samuel 18:3 (ESV)

3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.

The details of the covenant are not given to us. Most likely it was a commitment to look out for each other and care for each other's families if something should happen (see 2 Samuel 9:1–13). A strong personal loyalty is in view.1
