As we look at the report of Jonathan as it continued, we will deal with verses 1 Kings 1:44–46 together. We do this, firstly because Jonathan recited a matter to Adonijah that we see now for the second or third time; and secondly because the separate verses contain a minimum of information in themselves and are closely related to one another.
Jonathan told Adonijah of the identity of those that King David had sent to make Solomon king, including the king’s bodyguard that was perhaps in full force. These were the very persons that Adonijah had omitted to invite to his feast and planned to eliminate. Jonathan also told him that Nathan and Zadok had already anointed Solomon as king at Gihon. Further, Jonathan reported that Solomon had gone up from there into Jerusalem causing an uproar
of rejoicing. Jonathan said that that was the noise that they heard. In the last of these verses Jonathan reported that Solomon was sitting on the royal throne even then. All of this was a sure sign to Adonijah that his plans lay in ruins.
44 and the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And they had him ride on the king’s mule.
