Tyre was a city in Phoenicia. In the Bible, it is often mentioned with Sidon. Tyre was meant to become part of the territory of Asher (Joshua 19:29; 2 Samuel 24:7) but in reality, never belonged to Israel. It was a powerful and important trade city consisting of two parts. The old part of Tyre was a walled city on the mainland, and the other part was located on two islands about 600 metres off the coast. King Hiram of Tyre, who reigned from 969 - 936 BC, supplied Solomon with building materials for the temple in Jerusalem.
