The Assyrians conquered the mainland part of Tyre more than once, but never the island. Nebuchadnezzar besieged Tyre for thirteen years (585 – 572 BC) but was also unsuccessful in conquering the island. The city managed to recover its position in the time of the Persians, until Alexander the Great conquered the mainland city and, for the first time in history, also the island in 322 BC.
