What is the significance of the “great white throne” John saw?

Revelation 20:11 (ESV)

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.

A “throne” speaks to kingship. A king is to rule, and an aspect of ruling is executing justice (1 Kings 3:9, 1 Kings 3:16–28). John had earlier mentioned this throne in Revelation 4:2 and Revelation 5:1 in relation to God. This time John adds two adjectives to describe the throne and hence its occupant. The term “great” conveys a sense not so much of the size of the throne (though recall Isaiah 6:1) as of its authority and majesty. The colour “white” conveys the concept of translucence, brightness, and hence divinity (Luke 9:29; Revelation 1:14). In step with this divinity, the colour “white” also conveys the notion of victory (Revelation 6:2; Revelation 19:11; Revelation 14:14). This is a fitting colour for the throne of him who has already thrown the beast, the false prophet and Satan into the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20; Revelation 20:10).
