The Greek word translated as “sky” is the common word for “heaven.” Together the two words “earth and heaven” denote the entirety of God’s creation (Genesis 1:1). Creation is not neutral in relation to God but shows such respect for its Creator that earth quakes at God’s presence (Exodus 19:16). Psalm 114:3 and Psalm 114:5 describe the Red Sea and the Jordan River as “fleeing” at the presence of the Lord. Yet it is not just the majesty of God that prompts the fleeing in the present passage. The fall into sin affected God’s whole creation (Revelation 12:7–9) to the point of corrupting it (Romans 8:18–22). So creation—both earth and heaven/sky—cannot comfortably stand in God’s presence, especially not when he comes as King to judge.
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
