What does the term “thrown” imply?

Revelation 20:14 (ESV)

14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

This is the same word used earlier to describe what happened to Satan after his defeat in the heavenly war of Revelation 12:7; he was “thrown,” hurled away to earth (Revelation 12:9). It is again the same word used to describe how the beast and the false prophet, as well as the devil, travelled to the lake of fire (Revelation 19:20; Revelation 20:10). What is “thrown” is helpless to resist its travel or to break its inevitable crash. Being “thrown” is humiliating. Now the same word is used in relation to “Death and Hades,” to indicate that both are defeated, are helpless to resist being acted upon, and have no say in their destination. The term implies the victory of a Superior.
