This is the same word used to Revelation 12:9 to describe Satan’s expulsion from heaven. The term is derogatory inasmuch as a thrown person is helpless, can do nothing else than sail powerlessly through the air till he painfully hits the ground. Whereas Revelation 12:1–17 had pictured Satan being hurled from heaven to earth, Revelation 20:1–15 pictures him being hurled from earth into a fiery lake. The second hurling is humiliation upon humiliation, defeat upon defeat.
10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
