Christ Jesus suffered at the hands of people (Luke 4:28–29; Luke 23:18) and at the hands of authorities (Luke 22:54, Luke 22:63; Luke 23:10, Luke 23:24) because he sought to be faithful to his Father in heaven. Jesus told his disciples that the same would happen to them as happened to him (John 15:18–19). Peter himself had already hinted to his readers that they would experience misunderstanding and trials (1 Peter 1:7; 1 Peter 2:12, 1 Peter 2:19–20; 1 Peter 3:13–17; 1 Peter 4:1–5). Though suffering is par for the Christian course, the Christian should ensure that the cause of his suffering is never due to wrongs he himself committed; it should only be because his tormentors are pouring their disdain for Jesus Christ onto his followers.
16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name.
