1. 1 Peter 4:18 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

From where does Peter draw this quote?

1 Peter 4:18 (ESV)

18 And “If the righteous is scarcely saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”

Peter quotes the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament) at Proverbs 11:31: “If the righteous is repaid on earth, how much more the wicked and the sinner!” We note that the Septuagint has not rendered the Hebrew text of this verse accurately. Nevertheless, the Holy Spirit has moved Peter to use the Septuagint version to bolster his argument in 1 Peter 4:17. For our part, then, we need to respect the text as Peter gives it (instead of reading the Hebrew of Proverbs 11:31 into this passage).
