The ESV of Proverbs 3:34 reads, “Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor.” Peter’s rendition of this passage follows the Septuagint translation precisely (with the exception of replacing the word “Lord” with the word “God”). The Septuagint translation is clearly not a precise rendering of the original Hebrew, though it certainly communicates its sense. Yet since the Holy Spirit inspired Peter to quote the Septuagint, we need to work with that version.
5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
