It is sometimes argued that the consequences of David’s move to and deceit in Philistia was a mistake1 on account of the fact that it placed him in a very difficult position—a position from which only God’s providence could spare him.2 Certainly it appears as if David was in need of rescue, though it could also have been a mark of the success that he achieved. Having convinced Achish of his loyalty, he was on the verge of being drafted into the Philistine army from where he would have no doubt fought against the Philistines once the fight ensued.3
