The Bible recounts two instances where David had to flee to a cave. The first instance is mentioned in 1 Samuel 22:1–23. In 1 Samuel 22:1 you read that David who was saved by God in Gath, a city of the Philistines, could escape to the cave of Adullam. Later David once again flees to such a cave when Saul is pursuing him (1 Samuel 24:1–22). When David hides himself in those rocks of Engedi, Saul enters. He has to relieve himself, so he sits down. At that moment David could have killed Saul! But he does not; Saul is the king who was also anointed by God. David has great respect for the anointing of God. Didn’t he himself experience what it is to be anointed (see 1 Samuel 16:1–13)?
1 With my voice I cry out to the LORD; with my voice I plead for mercy to the LORD.
