God's renewing the whole creation defiled by the fall into sin implies that he will “be their God” and “they will be his people.” With the present words, the Lord repeats this promise. More, the words in question reveal the content of the “heritage” they will receive; that is, at the heart of the renewal of heaven and earth is the togetherness of God and his people, the harmony and unity that characterizes God’s covenant. There is, however, this difference with Revelation 21:3: in the earlier verse, God’s covenant promise was extended to the entire community; in the present verse it is extended to each individual in that community (note the singular).
7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
