This passage is a call for John’s readers to persevere for as long as we live in this broken life. Our calling is to conquer,
that is, to act in step with the reality of Satan’s defeat (Revelation 12:7–9; Revelation 20:1–3). So there is no place for cowardice and faithlessness among God’s people today, just as none was fitting for Israel when they approached the Promised Land (Numbers 13:1 – 14:45). Though we may feel like grasshoppers in comparison to Satan and his beast and the false prophet and the kings and elite, the good news of redemption is that Jesus Christ has already conquered our enemies.
7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.
