The Philistines gouge out Samson’s eyes, which had caused him so many of his problems in his life because they were fixed on forbidden objects (Judges 14:1–3, Judges 14:7–9; Judges 16:1). This makes Samson’s blindness fitting, from a literary standpoint. And it was often how prisoners in the ancient Near East were humiliated.1
21 And the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze shackles. And he ground at the mill in the prison.
