The young woman has already spoken of the powerful, sensual effect that the young man’s scent has had on her (Song of Solomon 1:3). This whole section of the poem (Song of Solomon 1:12–14) is also dominated by powerful, sensuous fragrances that describe the effect these lovers have on each other.
Nard is an expensive aromatic oil and was widely believed to possess aphrodisiac qualities.1 The young woman imagines her scent wafting up to her beloved as he lies on the couch. It is a very sensuous scene and no doubt she imagines the erotic effect she has on him.
12 While the king was on his couch, my nard gave forth its fragrance.
