1. Song of Solomon 2:4 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does the man bring the woman into a banqueting house?

Song of Solomon 2:4 (ESV)

4 He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.

The literal translation of this Hebrew phrase beth hayyayin is “house of wine.”1 It is a place where people enjoy wine. Wine has already been used in the Song to describe lovemaking (Song of Solomon 1:2). When she says her beloved brought her to a “house of wine” or banqueting hall she is probably anticipating him bringing her to a place where their lovemaking is enjoyed.2
