It will not help Job to rage against God’s justice and to deny that it applies to him. The fact remains: sin and wickedness lead to destruction.
Bildad’s statement is affirmed in other wisdom texts in the Bible (such as Psalm 1:1–6 and the book of Proverbs; see Proverbs 13:9). However, Bildad lacks the balance that is found in biblical wisdom texts. The book of Proverbs is not meant to be a set of iron rules. As long as we live in a broken world, there will always be exceptions to the general principle of retribution (see Psalm 13:1–6; Proverbs 19:10).
