What was Nehemiah displaying by fasting and praying?

Nehemiah 1:4 (ESV)

4 As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

Concurrent with the sitting and weeping and mourning were Nehemiah’s fasting and praying. The fasting demonstrated a depth of sorrow that choked Nehemiah’s appetite, and the praying displayed his conviction that only God himself could provide a solution.
