1. Song of Solomon 8:5–14 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How does the end of the Song of Solomon draw together many of the themes in this book?

Song of Solomon 8:5–14 (ESV)

5 Who is that coming up from the wilderness, leaning on her beloved? Under the apple tree I awakened you. There your mother was in labor with you; there she who bore you was in labor.

The different parts of this final section of the Song (Song of Solomon 8:5–14) draw together the themes of the Song. It forms a bracket with the opening of the Song in Song of Solomon 1:2–2:7, picking up many of the themes and images mentioned there. For example, the vineyard theme in Song of Solomon 8:11–12 matches Song of Solomon 1:6. These are the only two passages in the Song where the woman speaks of my vineyard. Her brothers who appeared only in Song of Solomon 1:6 appear again in Song of Solomon 8:8–9. Keeping the vineyard and the person of Solomon also provide links between Song of Solomon 8:11–12 and Song of Solomon 1:5–6.1
