Given the sufferings defining his readers’ realities, we could understand that they would doubt whether God is actually interested in them. Peter says that that conclusion is incorrect. In fact, the work of God as described in 1 Peter 1:1–2 makes very plain that these readers are precious to God; why else would he elect and even cause them to be born again! In the words of the second half of Psalm 55:22 (Peter had earlier quoted the first half of the verse), “he will never permit the righteous to be moved.”
