When are these things to happen?

Revelation 1:1 (ESV)

1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,

Our translation renders the Greek term with the word soon. That awakens in our mind the notion of shortly, say, in the next few days or perhaps the next few years. As it turns out, the phrase can also be translated as quickly (see Acts 12:7; Acts 22:18). There is much for the ascended Christ to do as he gathers to himself all those whom the Father has given to him for salvation (see John 17:2–3). The events described in this Revelation, then, span the entire period of world history between Christ’s ascension and his return. The Saviour promises to speed things along as fast as he can to hasten his return.
