It is not clear exactly what the dismissal refers to. It could refer to death.1 After all, Simeon was told that he would not see death before he sees the Messiah. Alternatively, it could simply mean that the time of waiting is over.2 The task of testifying to Mary and Joseph that their son was the Christ is a task that has been finished. Released from his earthly work of service, he can rest in the comfort of knowing that God’s work has/is coming to fulfilment.3
