Paul is concerned that some Christians will be tempted to think that the gospel is a licence for sin.1 If we are justified in God’s sight without any obedience of our own and based solely on the work of Christ, does this not mean that we are free to sin without consequence? The same question is also addressed in Romans 6:1–14. In answer, similar to the people of Israel (Exodus 4:23; Exodus 19:4–6; Exodus 20:1–6; Leviticus 25:42), Paul will explain that the Christian has been set free to serve the Lord.2
13 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.
